The average rate for work directly from a US company is 4 cpl for the most part and 5 cpl otherwise. And no, these US companies neither want to pay more nor hike your rate over time. And if the work is subcontracted from an Indian company to another one, you can pretty much imagine what happens to the rate.
The Indian company tries its best to get the work done at 2.25 - 3 cpl if the rate they are getting is 4 cpl and 3.5 - 4 cpl if the rate they are getting is 5 cpl. As you can see, there is no room for you to earn more because then you will be eating into their profits. You can complain only if you end up with a fraud company that doesn't pay you your dues or does deductions.
There is still a good number of companies that get paid 6-7 cpl, but considering the overall picture they constitute the minority.
